This family participated in a 6-day Recovery Camp designed to help children who face mental health challenges as a result of the war. The program provides children and their mothers with psycho-emotional rehabilitation by mental health professionals and recreational counselors. Children are engaged in play therapy, art therapy, music, games, and yoga. Over 1/3 of children who attend these camps are identified as having symptoms of PTSD and are referred to psychologists for follow-up services.
Living Through War
Olena, Kharkiv, Ukraine: “We are a family from Northern Saltivka in Kharkiv. On the first day of the war, we left our home, which was later completely destroyed. The memories of those early days are heavy and haunting. Every day, Kharkiv is shelled, and we live in constant fear. My daughter, Polina, still cries for our home and her friends, and she often recalls the painful moment she and her friend said goodbye in the basement.
The first months of the war were a nightmare—constant explosions, no electricity, water, or heat, and hours spent in cold, damp basements. My young son, Ilya, was terrified, trembling with every explosion. It was heartbreaking to shield him, knowing I could do little to ease his fear. Food was scarce, and even now, the children fear it will run out.
My children miss their grandparents, who have been under occupation for over two years. The absence of school and normal peer interaction has taken a toll, leaving them nervous and afraid of loud noises and sirens. When my son hears explosions, he runs to the corridor with his toys and favorite pillow, saying, “Mom, I’m very scared.”
Our family has faced immense hardships. My husband survived a rocket attack that left him hospitalized for two months. The uncertainty of that day and the fear of losing him will haunt us forever. More recently, a rocket killed my daughter’s friend in a park where we often walk. Polina was there just 15 minutes before the explosion. She cried for weeks and is still afraid to return to that place.
It seems as if life cannot get any worse. I long for my children to laugh again and have a peaceful and happy childhood. I want to believe in a better future but hope feels so far away.“

We are also immensely grateful to the chefs for the delicious and nutritious meals—always fresh, tasty, and prepared with care. The children eagerly anticipated each dish, which provided them with the strength and inspiration for active adventures.
I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the governesses for maintaining impeccable cleanliness and order in the rooms. Your tireless work created a cozy and comfortable environment for the children.
We truly appreciate the wonderful excursions that expanded the children’s horizons, filling them with new knowledge and lasting impressions. These experiences created memories that will stay in their hearts forever.
