This family participated in a 6-day Recovery Camp designed to help children who face mental health challenges as a result of the war. The program provides children and their mothers with psycho-emotional rehabilitation by mental health professionals and recreational counselors. Children are engaged in play therapy, art therapy, music, games, and yoga. Over 1/3 of children who attend these camps are identified as having symptoms of PTSD and are referred to psychologists for follow-up services.
Living Through War
Olena, Dnipro, Ukraine: “When the war began, we were in our home, a place my husband and I had spent our lives building. That morning is unforgettable—I sat on the floor holding newborn Stepan, hugging the older boys, unable to believe it was real. Despite the danger, we stayed because this is our home, our life, and where our loved ones are.
The war has brought constant fear and stress. The children stopped attending school, my husband lost his job, and missile attacks and explosions became part of daily life. On January 14, 2023, as we marked Stepan’s first birthday, tragedy struck when a residential building was hit, killing 46 people—a day filled with tears and despair.
Despite this, we continue to live in Dnipro, believe in the Armed Forces, and do what we can to contribute. Our boys are growing up fast, but they’ve had to learn how to react to danger. They often fall to the ground and cover themselves when explosions occur. It is heartbreaking to see them living with this constant fear.
We deeply hope to attend your camp to find some relief, recharge, and give our children a chance to experience a bit of a happy childhood. We also look forward to learning how to manage our anxieties.“
